Gartner elaborated that LLMs are trained on a mixture of data sourced from the internet, books, and various code repositories. As the proportion of AI-generated content within these sources increases, LLMs risk producing outputs that may be flawed or hallucinatory. Such degradation can lead to models appearing fluent and interactive while simultaneously becoming less reliable, posing significant risks in security contexts, including code reviews and security triaging.

The implications of model collapse are significant. A reported 84% of participants in Gartner's 2026 CIO and Technology Executive Survey expect an increase in funding for generative AI initiatives in their organizations. Although model degradation is currently a theoretical issue, it has the potential to become urgent as companies rapidly deploy LLM-powered solutions.

As AI-generated content becomes ubiquitous, regional regulatory requirements for verifying data authenticity are likely to intensify. Wan Fui Chan, a managing vice president at Gartner, noted that these regulations are likely to vary greatly across different jurisdictions, with some regions imposing stricter controls on AI content than others.

Understanding Model Collapse: Is It a Genuine Threat?

Melissa Ruzzi, director of AI at a security vendor, emphasizes that the quest for perfectly accurate training data—whether generated by humans or AI—is fundamentally flawed. Human biases and inaccuracies contribute to the problem, making it clear that both artificial and human-created data can lead to undesirable outcomes.

While concerns about model degradation through faulty training data are valid, Ruzzi insists that the issue encompasses both AI-generated and human-generated data, and organizations must address this challenge seriously. Diana Kelley, a chief information security officer at an AI governance firm, recognizes model collapse as a tangible failure mode observed in controlled research settings; however, she notes that its practical impact on enterprises currently is inconsistent.

Most companies do not train frontier LLMs from the ground up. Instead, they are increasingly developing workflows that generate self-replicating data stores, which can accumulate AI-generated text, summaries, and tickets. This trend raises concerns about the future as the prevalence of synthetic content increases, potentially leading to a decline in the ratio of high-quality human-generated data.

Strategies for LLM Users Moving Forward

To mitigate the risks associated with model degradation, organizations need to implement strategies for identifying and tagging AI-generated data. This could involve adopting active metadata practices, such as setting up real-time alerts for data that may need recertification, and appointing governance leaders skilled in managing AI-generated content responsibly.

Ruzzi advocates for conducting thorough security reviews and establishing clear guidelines for AI usage, including the selection of models. Ram Varadarajan, CEO of an AI security firm, stresses that reducing the risk of model collapse is achievable through disciplined data management practices, which involve understanding data sources and filtering out synthetic, harmful, and personally identifiable information from training inputs.

Kelley suggests that organizations can "save the signal" by prioritizing continuous model behavior evaluation and governing the quality of training data. She underscores the importance of recognizing that high-quality, human-generated data serves as the benchmark for reliable outputs. Organizations should treat their training and retrieval data as governed assets rather than byproducts, aligning with the zero-trust approach to data governance that Gartner advocates.
